This colored lithograph was completed by J. T. Bowen between 1839 and 1844 for the Octavo Version of John James Audubon's "The Birds of America". The image details an adult Common Gannet with its young; seated near the edge of a high Cliffside overlooking the ocean. The adult male has a yellow head, a white body, and green feet; distinguishing it from the grey and black young in the foreground. A flock of birds flying around a surfacing whale can be seen far in the background on the far-left.
The bottom of the image bears an inscription reading: "W.E.B. / Common Gannet / 1. Adult male. 2. Young." The bottom-left reads: "Drawn from Nature by J. J. Audubon F.R.S.F.L.S." The bottom-right reads: "Lith. Printed & Cold. by J. T. Bowen, Philada." The top-left corner reads: "No 85." The top-right corner is cutoff, but appears to read: "PL 425."Artwork Details
