Description

This is the death notice of Eliza Mallory, Victor Gifford Audubon's sister-in-law, on half-a-page that appears to have been torn from a booklet. The transcription is as follows: "Another tried friend, Miss Eliza Mallory, died May 9th. at Washington Heights, N.Y. City. From the first formation of the Helping Hand Band in that place, she was an earnest worker, and almost her last care was to send her gifts and collection for India. Her sister, Mrs. Audubon, writes of her. " We recall a time when owing to general depression of finances in the country, she feared her Band might fail to meet its pledge. "She fitted out a basket with useful and fancy articles, made entirely by herself, and sent it from house to house, by the hands of a boy (now himself a life-member) and so saved the"Helping Hands' for future use and blessing. She was never so happy as when encouraging young people to mission work, and procured a large number of members, many of whom are now men and women."
