This is a large portrait showing Mrs. Emma Guy Cromwell in late 1890s high necked dress. The dress appears to be white satin with gold stripes running lengthwise the full length of the dress. The high neck is trimmed with lace and has a pearl broach attached. Suspended from the broach is a pendant that supports a thick collar of pearls draped across the front and up over her shoulders. Attached below the pearls is a wide lace collar that completely covers her shoulders. The lace also drapes down her left side to within inches from the bottom of the dress. There is a shorter piece of lace attached to the right side of the dress that flows down that side of her dress and appears to fade from white to blue. The bottom of the dress is fringed with two rows of thin lace. Her belt is a blue ribbon with a large bow on her left hip and she has blue ribbons and bows on each of her wrists.
She is sitting in a high backed red velvet chair and there is a large curtain draped behind her left shoulder. Her feet are resting on a light red pillow. It is signed "A. J. Spence 98" in the lower right corner. There is an inscribed brass plate on the lower portion of the frame.Artwork Details
