Flute

Entry/Object ID

JJA.1941.7

Description

This is a wooden flute that measures approximately 22.312 inches in length and has six round finger holes plus a square hole at the mouth piece. The mouthpiece of this flute is not tapered like the mouthpiece of artifact 1941.6, which shares the same context as 1941.7. Instead, the mouthpiece for this flute was shaped by carving into the solid top and removing a section 0.187 inches in width from around the majority of the circumference, with the area directly above the square hole retaining this section. A knotted band is around the flute near the mouthpiece. Both flutes are items from chief of the "Bakgathla" [Bakgatla] tribe. 41.7 is written near the bottom of the flute.
