This is an original hand-colored aquatint engraving of the "Gold-winged Woodpecker" from the Havell edition of John James Audubon's publication, The Birds of America (1827-1838). It is part number 8 and plate 37 of the print series. The image depicts five woodpeckers perched on a dead tree trunk. The two female birds are shown at the top of the tree, quarreling with their beaks open towards each other. Below them are three male birds. One bird is slightly hidden behind the tree trunk with one eye trained on the viewer. Another bird peeks around the trunk and holds a worm in its mouth. The other bird perches on a branch, facing towards the viewer's right. All of the woodpeckers have black bibs and spotted bellies. The males have a red nape and a black whisker, while the females have a yellow underside to their tails and lack the black whisker of the males. The print is in a gilded frame with a white mat.Collection
