This is an original hand-colored aquatint engraving of the "Great American Hen and Young" from the Havell edition of John James Audubon's publication, The Birds of America (1827-1838). It is part number 11 and plate 6 of the print series. The print was trimmed at some point and parts of the part number and plate number in the top marginalia are missing. The image depicts a female turkey and nine chicks moving through grass towards the viewer's right. Two of the chicks bend down to inspect a small snail. One chick is shown pulling a tick from its wing with its beak, while another chick examines its feathers. The other chicks walk alongside the adult. In the background are hills and tall grass. The print is in a gilded frame with a narrow white mat that exposes the trimmed edges of the print.
