Description

This is a chromolithograph of the House Wren printed by Julius Bien, after an original engraving by Robert Havell, Jr., after original artwork by John James Audubon for his Birds of America. This is No. 14-8, Plate 120. This image features a male and female pair with its nest and young. The pair has built its nest in an old top hat hanging on a branch. The male is perched above the nest, facing toward the viewer's left. The female is perched on the branch extending through the opening in the top of the hat, feeding the three young, two of which are poking their heads through the same opening while the third clings to the hat below. The legend at the bottom center reads: "House Wren./ TROGLODYTES AEDON. Vieill, / Male. 1. Female. 2. Young, 3.4.5." This lithograph lacks the artist's credit at the bottom corner at the viewer's left. The printer's credit at the bottom corner at the viewer's right reads: "Chromolithy. by J. Bien, New York, 1860."
