Description

This is a chromolithograph of the Kentucky Warbler by Julius Bien, after an original engraving by Robert Havell, Jr., after original artwork by John James Audubon for his Birds of America. This is Plate 88. The plate number is written in pencil, in addition to "1 - 8" noted in the upper corner at the viewer's left. This image features a male and female pair perched on the branches of the white cucumber tree, with a faint blue halo around the image. The male is perched on the main flowering branch that extends upwards from the bottom edge. The male is presented in profile as it takes note of a spider dangling from a leaf at the viewer's left. The female is perched on a detached section of branch above and to the viewer's right of the male. The female is also leaning towards the viewer's left, but the body is angled in such a way as to provide the viewer with a clear view of its yellow underside. The legend, located at the bottom, reads: "Kentucky Warbler, / SYLVIA FORMOSA. Wils. / Male, 1. Female, 2. / White Cucumber Tree. Magnolia auriculata." This lithograph lacks the artist's credit at the bottom corner at the viewer's left. The printer's credit at the opposite corner reads: "Chromolithy. by J. Bien, New York 1859."
