My dear Mr. Audubon,
It has now been many years since our delightful journey together down the Missouri. How many sad changes have taken place since then! Poor Burgwin whom you knew was killed in battle, and McCrate whom you saw at Council Bluffs, died of consumption. I have recently returned from Mexico in ill-health and am glad to hear of your continued prosperity, and that you are still enjoying your green old age, a comfort to your friends, an honor to your country and to the world. Dr. John Madou of this city has recently received two pairs (males and females) of cross-bills and at my request has sent them to you by the Express today. He desires that I will say to you if you want a pair of living ones, he will have them procured for you. He is one of your admirers and a friend and patron of everything pertaining to Natural History besides being just such a gentleman as you would love to know. All those beautiful paintings you were so kind as to give me are the choice ornaments of the parlours of my friends in Boston and here. They are, as you must know, admired by everyone. I shall be in New York in May when I hope to have the honor of meeting you again. In the meantime, however, I beg you will write and tell me if the birds arrived safely. I wonder if this Revolution in your Father Lands will produce such men and such times as those when Robespierre said to Rear Admiral Audubon - "You smell of the guillotine!"
I am as ever, Very truly and sincerely,
Your friend and admirer
