This is a handwritten letter from J. Howard Smith to Delia Tyler congratulating her on her engagement. Transcription begins as follows: "Knoxville, Sept. 27, 1872
My Dear Delia,
I received your very pleasant and welcome letter this afternoon and hasten to express the gratification it afforded me. It was right & kind in you thus to confide to me a matter of such about & importance to you as that of which you write. From what you tell me, I feel assured you have not surrendered your affection unwisely, but have been sought and captured by one who will be the worthy sharer of your joys and sorrows. Wedded life is the utmost condition of humanity, and when the union is as you assure me in this case, "in the Lord' & between ascendant spirits, it becomes the channel of highest blessing. That this engagement may in due time be happily consummated and prove even more than you anticipate is my trust and prayer. I need not tell you my dear Child that in a spiritual sense I look upon you as a daughter. In past years I could always depend upon you. I could not recollect that you have ever disappointed me. As the wife you will, be what you have always been in all the relations in which I have seen you act from childhood - true, sincere, faithful, affectionate, considerate. May be the Angel of the Covenant ever be with you to bless and make you a blessing! Tell your particular friend that he is to take off one of my finest, & that if he does not prove the best husband in the world, I will call him to a tremendous account one of these days. You will probably see Mrs. Howard Smith nearly as soon as you receive this as she is now in ________ and intends to visit New York on Tuesday next - I believe. She will speak for herself. With most affectionate regards to your mother & all the home __________ I am your friend and forever partner, J. Howard Smith"Collection
