"Messr. Audubon
care of Messr. Rabaud Freres
Marseilles, France
London
June 8th. 1836
My Dear Friend,
We received yesterday a letter from H. Clay Jr. dated New York May 2nd. announcing the arrival there, and requesting that you should insure whatever apes you may have purchased and shipped for him to the full amount of their worth. This is requested because out of all those which he himself shipped to America one only reached there Alive! I have some expectation that this will be in time for you at Marseilles.
Young Alex Gordon Bakewell, Grand Cross, Night of the bath, J. R. S. F. F. F. F. , arrived here with his suite a few days ago, and has taken apartments (furnished of course and that splendidly too) at 21 Sully Place, Regents Park. He looks in good health and who could desire more! Since your departure hence I have sent off forty two volumes of our Work to different quarters and Next Week the residue for Boston (full bound) go off also by the Westminster. We however have not had a single letter by the Young Nobleman - Nay not even a line from N. Berthoud, We heard from Maria a few days ago all well! The Texian War is progressing in the Most Cruel Manner on the side of the Conquering Mexicans and I doubt much if it will prove convenient for John and I to present visitors at the Court of Santanna, but never mind we will sail by the Gladiator on the 1st. of August and trust to God! We expect Alex, Will and the two Girls here this Week. The Third No. is almost ready for delivery and the 5th. all but finished engraving. Old Phillips went off with Cap. Dixen on the 1st and has left Havell in the lurch about 1 thousand pounds!! but Havell hangs like Grim Death to the Valuables. Henry Wickliff is here cutting quite a clash. I have ran ashore as to birds on the desert I land and am now rather lazy, though thinking monstrous deep! We had a pretty considerable row of 150 Ladies & Gentlemen at Miss Cotine's the other night. Cuthbertson & family at Diner on Monday last, when we left at _________ and at tea to go in Miss Cotine's box at the Opera where we (opened) our Ears, No Pricked Nerves; and listened most particularly to that Enchantress Malibrair, who infact or better say surpasses in point of fact all that has ever been said of Orpheus. The hours ever hung full! Miss Pettingill has been with us too, and slept in your own very bed. Think of that My Dear Boys! What dreams she must have dreamt! &&& Our Worthy Friend Mr. Heppenstall has also been with us. Five of them and I wish there had been twelve of them! Mr. Gordon has gone to Rotterdam to seek the Ghost of the Galloping one, but as he may fail in this we look for him on Sunday next again. Pitois has placed Shattuck in a good House at Paris, See him or them, and do not forget to call on Young Murray which I think must have been forgotten by you both before. No Pictures have reached us yet, or anything from Redoute! Attend to all this as I cannot conceive that it will be possible for me to join you at Paris or go to Nantes this time. After you leave Marsailles push for Paris or for Nantes as you May but please to do, and after returning to Paris attend to all them and then come on to us as fast as you can, because we will have only three weeks to prepare for our Voyage. The guns will be here Next Week, and now My Dear Boys God bless You, Your Friend & Father, John J. Audubon
We have received the Subscriptions of the Duke of Northumberland and of Colonel Phillips of North Wales and a snuff box from Lord Ravensworth. Havell tells me this morning that some one is about subscribing A New, i.e. one of the ex-subscribers Wishes to go on. Mamma joins me in Blessings, So Adieu again, Ask at- Pitois for the Box for my sister Which I will try to send to him if possible. Young Murray is at, Monsieur de Bligerires No. 45, Rue de Clichy, Chaullie d'Autin at Paris"Collection
