This is a handwritten letter from Charles Ray Palmer to Miss Audubon. The letter is answering an inquiry about a hymn written by Mr. Palmer's father, in which Palmer explains the mistake. The transcription is as follows:
"562 Whitney Avenue
New Haven, Conn.
May 8th. 1908
Dear Miss Audubon,
I have your kind note of the 16th. inst. I perceive from it that you are under a harmless mistake which not a few have made before you, of thinking me to be the Hymn-writer, whereas I am only his son. I am happy, however, to be able to gratify the wish that was in your heart. I have two stanzas of my father's best known Hymn, in his own handwriting, which I herewith place at your disposal. It is the best I can do for you, unless I part with the original draught of the Hymn, and that you will hardly expect of me. These stanzas were written late in his life, when making a copy of the Hymn for somebody, on a sheet of note-paper, by the accident of turning over two pages instead of one, and fortunately they have been preserved for you.
Very cordially yours,
Charles Ray Palmer"Collection
