This is a handwritten letter by Hattie B. Audubon to George Grinnell. The letter is two-pages in length with writing on both sides of the paper. The transcription is as follows:
"1904 Second Street
Louisville, Kentucky
Feb. 24th. 1932
Dear George,
Thank you for your letter of January the twenty-ninth; it brought to me pleasant memories of the time long past. I had nearly two years of pleasant home life with Fanny's nephew and family. It grieved me dreadfully to have to leave them, but I never dispute a doctor's decision. I am glad to hear that your wife is well and that you are enjoying week-ends in the country. I envy you your being out of doors.
Of all our large family, including Uncle Victor's children there are none left except my brother Will, who lives in Australia, my sister Florence, whom you may remember as "Polly", and myself. Of course, in the generation below me, there are grandchildren. My brother Will has a son who distinguished himself in the World War nearly losing his life, and losing his right hand; but before he left the hospital he had learned to write with his left hand. He has a very good wife, but no children. My sister Florence has, of course grown old, and now has to go south every winter. She is now in Florida. I doubt whether you remember her, for she was younger than Delia. The Audubon name will die out with my brother Will's son, Leonard. In my home are my nurse and her mother do everything in their power for my comfort, but of course I have many long hours in which I can do nothing. Even my blind book is failing me for the one finger with which I can read is losing its sensitiveness , and my arm gets very tired in a few minutes, but I have no pain, and many kind friends come to visit me. With kind regards to your wife, I am, Yours affectionately,
