Description

This is a handwritten letter from Harriet Audubon to Miss Helen Croes written in 1864. The transcription is as follows: "Washington Heights August 16th. 1864 Dear Helen, I received your kind letter a very long time ago but I could not answer it sooner, you know I am always busy and ever since I received your letter I have had a cousin from the west staying with me and of course I have devoted all my spare time to her not even practising any to speak of. The piece from Bellsario that I used to play is by Goria, do not get discouraged in learning it if you find you do not get on fast, it took me several months. There is a young lady living opposite to us who plays the piano beautifully but I have never seen her yet to speak to her. I wish I could pay you a visit at Westchester, but it will not be possible, I have don all my running away for this summer, and indeed I feel weary with the journeys I have taken and glad to be at home again, I will tell you about them, in the first place, a week ago last Friday evening I went with Grandmamma and my cousin sixteen miles up the Harlem Railroad to visit a friend of ours, we stayed there until Monday morning early, then on the Tuesday following, we all went up the river to Poughkupise to show my cousin the Hudson river and to visit my friend, Julia Nelson with whom we stayed until Thursday morning when we came home in the boat, then on Saturday we started off again, we went to my sister's where we stayed until Monday morning. I expect to see your sister today or tomorrow, she wrote to ask me what day would suit me best for her to come but the letter did not come until last night and though I wrote an answer and sent it early this morning I have not the least idea that it will reach her in time to be of any use. I wish I could drive over to Harlem for her, I have some hours in the morning but I cannot do anything with our present coachman, the one we had ran off to the army without giving us any idea that he was going to leave us and we had to engage one the next day for Mr. Church was just going away to be gone for ten days and he the coachman not Mr. Church knows not quite as much about driving as I do, which is nothing and he has the same amount of knowledge with regard to the care of horses in the stable, added to this he has not the least particle of common sense, so you can easily imagine how unwilling I should be to cross the track with him. Goodbye dear Helen, write again soon. Please give my love to your mother, Your affectionate friend, Harriet B. Audubon Little Rosa, that is to say Mr. Fidget says, you never answered the letter she long ago sent to you"
