Description

This is a handwritten letter from Harriet Audubon to Miss Helen Croes written in 1864. The transcription is as follows: "Washington Heights June 16th. 1864 Dear Helen, I received your letter a good while ago, therefore I owe you an apology for not having answered it sooner, but you and I have both of us begun so many letters with apologies that I am fully determined not to waste any more paper on the worn out subject. You do not know how much I enjoy seeing you here and my pleasant little trip in the cars with you to Manhattanville was very agreeable. How mush I wish you were to be with us this summer, I am afraid I shall be very lonely sometimes particularly when I have half holidays as I do sometimes in the summer, how much I enjoyed my spare hours last summer. Our family is gradually increasing but as yet no more friends for me. We have a loving couple here whom you would imagine to be just married, the gentleman comes up in the early train every day and takes her to ride in Central Park, where they stay until after 7:00, not troubling themselves about such unromantic things as dinner until after their return, he never leaves the house without her except for his daily business, and the constant demonstrations of affection between them are very striking, we found upon enquiry however that they have married over eleven years. I had a lovely ride on horseback the other day, Jeannie has just become possessed of a new bridle made of light brown leather which is very becoming to her, and having shed her winter coat she is beautifully smooth and glossy, I thought, as I looked at her waiting for me that I had never seen a more beautiful creature. The weather for several days has been so lovely that it is a delight just to live and breath the pure air and look at this beautiful world, the grass and trees never looked so bright to me as they do this summer. Mr. Church sends his kind regards to you and Miss Price does the same; my Grandmother and others would, if they knew that I am writing. I say Mr. Fidget a day or two ago; knowing the strong affection you must feel for him I take pleasure in informing you that his health is good and he is no thinner than when you last saw him. Hoping that you will write again very soon and with much love to your mother and sister, I am ever your affectionate friend, Harriet B. Audubon P.S. In knitting my hood I had just got to 180 stitches when I found it was about big enough for a small child so I got larger needles and commenced another which is a little more than half finished. Please remind your sister that she owes me a letter and I am longing to hear from her."
