Description

This is a handwritten letter from Harriet Audubon to Miss Helen Croes written in 1864. The transcription is as follows: "Harriet Audubon Washington Heights Jan. 3rd, 1864 Dear Helen, I thank you very much for your pretty Christmas present it was very kind of you to think of giving me anything and you could not have given me anything that would have pleased me better, the bright color contrasts beautifully with my black silk dress and is much more becoming to me than blue which I usual ware because I happen to have it. I have written to you twice lately but the first letter I did not send, because it was so very badly written that I was ashamed of it, the other gave you an account of a very dull Christmas but as circumstances have prevented me from sending it I will send you instead an account of a very happy New Year's Day, and at the same time will wish you a Happy New Year and very many of them. Early in the morning, that means Monday morning not Sunday, I went up into the village and purchased some wine and cake for our callers Miss Price and I, in recounting up the number of them, make out 12 but most people would count only four, but we studied arithmetic from Greenleaf's National Arithmetic and of course are competent to count correctly. About half past twelve Mr. Church went to get a very pleasant young lady who is staying in the neighborhood and we all went skating together and had a merry time as you may imagine, so altogether we had a merry happy day. I have been taking an entire holiday between Christmas and New Year's Day, I intend to give four music lessons all through the week; but the day after Christmas I was feeling quite unwell, (if it had been one of my pupils I should say the nature of the disease was Christmas dinner, as it was myself, I know better) and have determined not to go out, when, I was deciding, two of my pups sent word they were sick, (Christmas dinner of course) so I determined not to go out that day and it ended in my taking the whole week. which I enjoyed very much in spite of a little indisposition and very gloomy weather. And now I have a little request to make, which is to send the letter I enclose, to Dr. Seisse minister of a Lutheran Church in either Archdale of Market St. , I think, the former, you will easily find out the number of his house by the directory and you will oblige me very much. Grandmamma joins me in love to your mother, your sister and yourself. Hoping very soon to hear from you again, I am ever Your affectionate friend, Harriet B. Audubon Dear Helen, I have waited a day or two in hopes of getting a white envelope, but could not so please excuse the brown one.
