JJA.1944.36.1a&bDescription
This is a handwritten letter (part a) from Lucy Audubon to Mifs Croes of Philadelphia. (Mifs is an old term for Miss). The letter reads as follows:
"June 18, 1865 / My dear Mifs Croes / Your kind and interesting letter would not have lain so long unacknowledged if I could have helped it, but for some time past I have had much writing to do, a great deal of sewing, and other interruptions in my daily routine that has made time appear to fly, but excuse me and rest assured I fully appreciate your attention to me. I can easily enter in to your feelings at the appearance in your estimable Mother of a dis-order so severe and one that too frequently leaves it in __behind in more ways than one behind (strikethrough). I trust in this instance it will note prove so, but that your Mother will rise quite better in health and spirits.
Your inquires after our heath (sp. health) I am happy to answer favorably in general. Harriet has one or two short periods of indisposition but is now quite well. The house is quite full, but not exactly with congenial society; yeh none objectionably. Mr. Church who still stands foremost in our estimation is very little here & the rest of our inmates being new we have not many home like evenings and no more rides which used to be so delightful. I do not tell whether you remember my Grand Daughter Maria, but she has just sailed to California for her health which for some time has been very feeble. I am sorry to sent you so dull & stupid a letter in return for yours, but pray "accept the will for the deed."
The foliage this year does indeed seem more full than usual, perhaps owing to the con-tinued rains and warm atmosphere here the thermometer generally ranging between 80 and 90. With affectionate regards to your Mother Sister & Brother when you see him.
I am my dear young friend / yours truly / Lucy Audubon"
The original envelop (part b) accompanies the letter. Writing reads, "Mrs. Audubon / June 21st 1865 / Mifs M. Croes / 1531 Spruce Street / Philadelphia / Penn"Collection
