JJA.1944.37Description
This is a handwritten letter from Lucy Audubon to Mr. Croes. The letter reads as follows
My Dear Mr. Croes,
Your friendly letter I received last night. It gave me real pleasure to be remembered by one I esteem so highly, on any terms but combined with a request from the Daughter of Professor Henry a greater value. The request I will to the best of my ability comply with but so many applications have been made to me that now it is rather difficult to find a detached name. The destruction of the Smithsonian Institute, all, I think must deplore, I am however truly pleased to hear of the health of my respected friend the Professor, pray give my regards to him and say I yet have the Copper plates. Both Harriet and myself suffered from the severity of the winter, we are now pretty well and passing our time much as we did when you were here with the exception of the very delightful drives we used to have. Mr. Church is still the magnet around which we assemble for enjoyment when he come home, but I sometimes think not much to his own satisfaction. Mr. Benjamin Church I cannot tell you when I have seen him. Yesterday Mr. and Mrs. Rodenstein Senior spent the day with us. The family are all well. Now I turn to your excellent Mother, I hope she is in better health than when I last heard from her, I am not sure on which side the correspondence stopped but I am certain on my part not for want of interest or regard. Please in your letter to her say how often I think of her and of her Daughters, and give them my sincere good wishes. We have had many changes in the house these last 4 months, but for six to come, we shall be stationary in our inmates. Harriet is pursuing her duty to her young Pupils or would join me in my remembrances to you, and the hope you will not forget us but sometime come and see us.
Believe me Dear Sir your friend,
