This is a handwritten letter (part a) from Lucy Audubon to Mrs. Croes. The letter reads as a follows:
"Dec. 27, 1863
Thank you my dear Mrs. Croes for your beautiful and useful present, but do not imagine There was any fear of my forgetting either yourself, Son or daughters. The visit of Mr. Croes was so short, and so entirely engrossed by Mr. John Church whilst he was under our roof, That I did not know of the request for an engraving of Mr. Audubon. The young ones who mentioned it after your Son had left us; but perhaps your Son would have asked for the likeness had he not been frightened (valliant as he is) at my working costume when he came into my apartment to say farewell! When he knocked at the door, I said "is it Lady or Gentleman" he replied the latter, and in spite of my disability I met him to shake hands. No one remembers the name for whom I was to give the picture. I believe I know but few names in Washington now, Professor Henry, Colonel Abert, Fortunataus Cosby, Son of the Judge and a Mr. Baird who does not merit one; but either of the other Gentlemen I shall be glad to supply if you can tell me how. For more than a month I have been troubled with a cold and cold Lawyers when I shall be free I cannot tell perhaps not ever in this world. Harriet has also a bad cold; She joins me in love to your family circle. I hope it may be convenient for you to spend some time here next summer. I cannot tell you anything amusing for Christmas has been spent nearly alone. My mind naturally turning upon the dear ones I have lost. May the Merciful God preserve you dear friend from the loneliness, the want of some one to look to for advice and consolation, I often feel. Excuse this dull letter it is nearly dusk, and my eyes are unusually weak. Our house too seems sorrowful, and will for awhile, after so melancholy & sudden death. Believe me dear Mrs. Croes your affectionate friend, Lucy Audubon " The original envelope (part b) accompanies the letter. Writing on the envelope reads, "Received Dec 29th 1863 / Mrs Croes / New Brunswick / New Jersey."Collection
