Description

This is a handwritten letter from Sarah Cleghorn to Delia Tyler. The transcription is as follows: "My Dear Delia, Will you excuse a letter so late in the evening though hurried in tone? For ever since your kind note of the 28th. of February came, I have been wishing to answer it. I am so glad you liked the World Tomorrow and that you think of subscribing to it perhaps. The stories I have been writing for it have all been true - The monks in Guatemala who converted the fierce Indians of Toguletlan by Christian friendliness; The ___________ an old caisson worker tortured and fainting with poison gas, who saved eleven unconscious comrades - the wonderful rescue of slaves by an ex-slave Harriet Tubman, who could neither read nor write & who ran away herself & made 19 trips back into the south rescued over 300 others, though fifty thousand dollars was offered for her capture, dead or alive; & now I am writing a little account of the founder of the Poor _________ who preceded St. Francis a hundred years. Your Cousin Eliza I expect knew a lot of their things and could assist me with many more. Cousin Delia you don't know how I love and use the brooch you gave me in memory of dear cousin Eliza. I wear it a great deal, and it is very often noticed and inquired about. I hope & pray I may never lose it. I also have the one cousin Eliza gave me which belonged to dear cousin Annie - a tamborine, in which all children that see it delight. Aunt Jessie is in Macon, where I address her. Care Dr. Cleghorn, The chi______ie, Macon, Ga. She & Carl & the twins have all been ill - I think the "flu" - but they're all much better again. Indeed I should delight to see you. My dear friend Anna Rochester who was one of the founders of this house and the community in which I am living is an old friend of Mr. Leonard Tyler! I spent a day with them a month of two ago. Affectionately, Sally M. Cleghorn, 352 West 27th. , New York City, Tuesday"
