Description

This is a first edition, hand-colored lithograph of the Little or Acadian Owl by J. T. Bowen, after an engraving by Robert Havell, Jr, after original artwork by John James Audubon. This lithograph was printed for the Octavo Edition of Audubon's Birds of America. This is No. 7, Pl. 33. The image depicts two owls. One owl is perched on a branch extending from the margin at the viewer's right in the upper half of the composition. This owl's body faces the viewer, and its head it turned toward the margin at the viewer's right. The second owl is depicted standing on a small knoll with a dead common mouse in the talons of its right foot. Its wings are partially raised in a mantling posture. The letters, "RT," are included just below the bottom edge of the knoll, indicating work done by Ralph Trembly, one of Bowen's artists (Audubon Art Prints, Steiner). The legend below the image at the center reads, "Little or Acadian Owl. / Common Mouse." The artist's credit at the bottom corner at the viewer's left reads, "Drawn from Nature by J. J. Audubon. F.R.S.F.L.S." The printer's credit at the opposite corner reads: "Lithd. Printed & Cold. By J. T. Bowen. Philada."
