Description

This is an Amsterdam edition facsimile of Robert Havell, Jr.'s engraving of the Little Sandpiper, after original artwork by John James Audubon. The facsimiles for this edition were copied from originals in the Teyler Museum in the Netherlands. The prints were made using eight-color offset printing (Audubon Prints, Steiner). This is No. 64, Plate CCCXX. This image features a male and female pair. The male, on the viewer's left, is presented in profile. The male is perched on a rock, facing the female on the viewer's right, and angled down toward the stream in which the female stands. The female is also presented in profile, facing toward the male. The stream continues into the distance between steep, tree-covered banks. The inscription at the bottom center of the image reads: "Little Sandpiper / TRINGA PUSILLA, WILS. / Male Adult Summer plumage 1. F 2." The artist's credit at the bottom corner of the image at the viewer's left reads: "Drawn from Nature by J. J. Audubon. F.R.S. F.L.S." The engraver's credit at the opposite corner reads: "Engraved, Printed and Coloured by R. Havell. 1836." The watermark for this edition, "G. Schut & Zonen R Audubon T (Both the R and T are stylized.)," is present in its entirety along the bottom edge near the center and corner at viewer's right, with a partial watermark at the corner at the viewer's left.
