JJA.1995.1Description
This is a handwritten manuscript by John James Audubon, titled "Plate 89 Nashville Warbler." "Plate 89" is handwritten in the upper left corner and the number "329" is written in upper right corner in heavy blue ink (marker or crayon). The manuscript covers approximately one half of one side of the sheet. The document is attached at all four corners by adhesive to a backing sheet and enclosed on three sides in a Mylar sleeve. One page on a sheet of woven paper watermarked "Fellows/1829" bearing Audubon's heading, "Plate 89, Nashville Warbler", being the narrative portion of his description of this for the Ornithological Biography as published, with minor corrections; tipped to a larger sheet. Audubon based his painting of a male and female of this species on three or four examples that he shot and on "A few specimens belonging to Mr. Titian Peale of Philadelphia... which he, with his usual kindness, lent me for a few days to compare their coloring with my drawings and notes." Peale's specimens were the only others that Audubon ever saw. Audubon is critical that "With the exception of a few low, eagerly repeated, creaking notes, I have heard any sounds from them. While uttering these notes, which is all the species seem to have in lieu of song, the male stands erect and still." Audubon concludes "I am not aware of its nest having been discovered or described by any naturalist."Collection
