Description

This is a morning issue of The Sun, published in New York on Thursday, June 18, 1835. This issue is Number 557, priced at one cent. The newspaper consists of one folded sheet of paper, with four columns printed on each half. The articles on the first page range in subject from advertisements to the "Hygeian System of Physiology" to the marriage of Lady Gwendaline Talbot to Don Marc Antonio Borghese. Articles for The Sun continue onto the second page, focusing on local news and news from other states. "Public Announcements" and "Wants" are printed on the third page. Information from the Police Office is printed on the fourth page, alongside some news reprinted from other newspapers, a few wanted ads, and advertisements for various "remedies." An article about John James Audubon's Birds of America is printed at the top of the third column from the left, on the second page. The article reads as follows: "Audubon's Birds.-Our attention has frequently been arrested, and not without profit to ourselves, by the magnificent plates of Audubon's Ornithology which Coleman exhibits in his windows. The plates are changed every few days-weekly, we believe.-The subjects this week are the 'Stanley Hawk' and the 'Belted King Fisher.' How much more credit do the exhibition of those plates reflect upon the enterprising proprietor of that valuable establishment, than would the display of tame, mawkish and even indelicate prints, with which some of his competitors in the book business endeavor to attract the gaze of the multitude."
