Description

This is a copy of the New-Hampshire Statesman & State Journal, which was issued in Concord on Saturday, October 6, 1832. This issue was No. 21 of Vol. II. The Journal consists of a single folded sheet of paper, with six columns printed on each half of the sheet. "Dr. Wittredge (?)" is written on the first page at the upper left, and a note, "P2 Audubon," is penciled at the upper right. The first two columns on the front page of the Journal have probate notices and information regarding new books. Much of the remaining four columns are dedicated to discussing the upcoming presidential election, with the printing of a circular from republicans in Portsmouth and an article about proscription from "The Boston Patriot." The political discussion continues in the columns on the inside of the front page, with some space dedicated to miscellaneous news items, marriages, and deaths. The reprint of a letter from John James Audubon appears at the top of the sixth column from the left on this page. The segment reads as follows: "We have a letter before us from Mr. Audubon dated from Eastport, Me. on the 12th inst. We give the following extract, as illustrative of the extraordinary perseverance with which he prosecutes ornithological discoveries. -Phil. Gaz. 'I have to announce you the discovery of a new wren, or as I must call it, a Troglodyte. I would gladly come from Boston-nay, from Philadelphia itself fifty-two times per annum into these parts, (Dennysville) could I be sure of being thus each time rewarded. The little rogue was shot in the deepest recesses of the darkest woods, where beds of moss full knee deep spread themselves by acres-where the sun seldom peeps and where man seldom walks-it breeds hereabouts, and I know a good deal of its tricks and actions. I have made a fine drawing (excuse my saying so, the Lord knows if bye and bye it will believed that I ever drew a bird) of the Tetrao Canadiencis of four figures, and some rare plants to me. These birds build in the State, and are found in it during all seasons. I have eight, some of which are in beautiful plumage.'" The third page details the results of a cattle show and contains multiple advertisements for items ranging from vegetable cough syrup to merino shawls. These advertisements continue onto the back page.
