Description

This is a small piece of paper with a handwritten message allowing passage on the U.S. Ship North Carolina. Calligraphy on the front reads, "U.S.S.N. Carolina / July 27th, 1841 / Permit Philip Godfrey to pass the ship on duty." It is signed "L.M."[?] The back reads in different handwriting: "presented by Li[…] Barton / of the U.S. Ship North / Carolina to Eliza / A. Mallory / August 6th 1841."
