Description

This is a limited edition reproduction print of the "Pileated Woodpecker" from the Havell edition of John James Audubon's publication, The Birds of America (1827-1838). The edition is a Princeton Audubon Double Elephant Edition with the seal embossed near the lower right corner. The image depicts four large woodpeckers: 1 adult male, 1 adult female, and 2 young males. The birds are perched in various positions on the trunk of a dead tree wrapped with a grapevine. The female bird sits at the top with a caterpillar in her beak. The adult male below her uses his beak to create a hole in the trunk. The young males are facing one another with their beaks partially open. The print is in a gilded frame with a white mat. Like the original print, this reproduction has the print and plate numbers printed in the upper corners. In the upper left corner of the print, the part number says, "No. 23." In the upper right corner the plate number says, "PLATE CXI." At the bottom of the print, the artist's credit at the lower left says, "Drawn from Nature by J.J. Audubon, F.R.S. F.L.S." The legend at the center bottom says, "Pileated Woodpecker, / PICUS PILEATUS. Linn, / Adult Male, 1. Adult Female, 2. Young Males, 3, 4. / Racoon Grape. Vitus astivalis." The printer's credit at the bottom right says, "Engraved, Printed, & Coloured by R. Havell." Written in pencil in the lower left corner is the Princeton edition print number. This print is 530 out of 1500.
