This is an original hand-colored aquatint engraving of the "Raven" from the Havell edition of John James Audubon's publication, The Birds of America (1827-1838). It is part number 21 and plate 101 of the print series. The image depicts a male raven perched on a branch of shag bark hickory. The bird has black feathers with a blue sheen. It faces to the viewer's left with its beak slightly open. Some of the leaves on the branch are dark and pale green while other leaves have turned yellowish-brown. Within the leaves are greenish-brown nuts with husks that are shown split open. The print is in a gilded frame with a white mat.
The part number and plate number in the top marginalia are obscured by the mat inside the frame. In the upper left corner of the print, the part number says, "No. 21." In the upper right corner the plate number says, "PLATE CI." At the bottom of the print, the artist's credit at the lower left says, "Drawn from nature by J.J. Audubon F,R,S. F,L,S." The legend at the center bottom says, "Raven, / CORVUS CORAX, / Male. / Thick Shell-bark Hickory. Juglans laciniosa." The printer's credit at the bottom right says, "Engraved, printed & Coloured by R. Havell, Jun.r."Artwork Details
