This is an original Havell engraving of John James Audubon's "Red winged Starling," plate 67 from "The Birds of America." The picture shows four birds on a Swamp Maple. The upper bird, number 1, is a male. The bird on the left, number 2, is a young male. The bird in the center right, number 3 is the female while the bird under her, number 4, is a young or juvenile. Bird number 1 is the older bird and is all black with the exception of its bright red feathers on the upper wing and shoulders. It is in flight and flying down and to the left. Bird number 2 has the beginnings of the red shoulders but is not pure black. It has brown and white strips of feathers running along the length of its back and its wings. He is looking up at the male in flight. The female is in a downward facing position and looking to the left. She is predominately brown with white highlights on the wings and over her eyes. Her breast is white with brown spots throughout. The young bird is brown overall with darker brown spots on its breast. Its cheeks are white with a dark crescent below the eye. All of the perched birds are perched on the branches of a swamp maple tree.
Above the picture on the left is No 14 and on the right is Plate 67. Below the picture is printed: "Redwinged Starling, Adult Male. 1. Young 2, Female old 3.
