JJA.1938.452Description
This is a handwritten manuscript of a poem entitled "Shall I Awake" by Eliza Audubon. Transcription is as follows: "Shall I waken and find it all a dream May the vanished years be mine again May I drink from the waters of Youth's bright stream, Forgetting the past and the present pain. Has that faithful past been all a mist, A false marriage, with no real place Through the wind of Destiny blow as it list May I still find blessing, and light and grace The old Earth turns to the Spring time sweet. The soft winds will blow, and the flowers will bloom You will be ________ and cold and sleet Past with the writer's darkness and gloom But never again shall the doors unclose To welcome the coming of those most dear never again, while the twilight glows Shall I tenderly ____ them waiting here For life has passed and all that is left is the memory of what has been And I sit forlorn of all bereft But hope in meaning world unseen.
