Description

This colored lithograph was completed by J. T. Bowen between 1839 and 1844 for the Octavo Version of John James Audubon's "The Birds of America". The image details two male and female Guillemots on the edge of a grassy cliff overlooking the ocean in the background. The female can be seen on the left looking upwards into the sky; it's brown coat distinguishing it from the black and white male on the right. The bottom of the image bears an inscription reading: "W.E.B. / Slender-billed Guillemot / 1. Male. 2. Female." The bottom-left reads: "Drawn from Nature by J. J. Audubon F.R.S.F.L.S." The bottom-right reads: "Lith. Printed & Cold. by J. T. Bowen, Philada." The top-left corner reads: "No 95." The top-right corner is cutoff, but appears to read: "PL 475."
