Description

This is a black leather suitcase (1999.24a) that stored the life mask of John James Audubon, which was made in England. A crown has been stamped on both latches. The suitcase contains packing material and a red felt bag (1999.24b) from Hartdegen & Co. in Newark, N. J. A greeting card formerly stored in the suitcase gave information regarding the item's provenance. The greeting card has an image of "Washington's Headquarters, Morristown, New Jersey," with the following inscription on the inside of the card: "Mask of J. J. Audubon, Donated by Widow of Muriel (Wiss) Havell, Direct descendant of Robert Havell, Engraver, painter, & Lithographer for J. J. Audubon. Given to Havell by Audubon."
