Description

This is a hand-colored lithograph of the Tennessee Swamp Warbler by J. T. Bowen, after an original engraving by Robert Havell, Jr., after original artwork by John James Audubon for his Birds of America. This lithograph was printed for the Royal Octavo Edition of the Birds of America. This is No. 22, Pl. 110. This image depicts a single male warbler perched on the branch of Ilex laxiflora, with its green berries and blue-green leaves. The male is presented in profile, facing the viewer's left. The drawer's credit, "R. T.," just above the legend indicates this image as the work of Ralph Trembly, one of Bowen's artists (Audubon Art Prints, Steiner). The legend at the bottom center of the image reads: "Tennesse Swamp Warbler. / Male / Ilex laxiflora." The artist's credit at the bottom corner at the viewer's left reads: "Drawn from Nature by J. J. Audubon. F.R.S. F.L.S." The printer's credit at the bottom corner at the viewer's right reads: "Lithd. Printed & Cold. By J. T. Bowen. Philada."
