Description

This is a hand-colored lithograph of the Texan Skunk by J. T. Bowen after original artwork by John James Audubon for the Octavo Edition of The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America. This is No. 11, Pl LIII. The image features a single skunk with a small bird in its front paws. In this rendering of the Texan skunk, the subject is in the center of the composition. Unlike the depiction in 2019.3.27, the dead bird is not in the skunk's jaws, and the viewer can see the skunk's head in profile. The distant landscape is comprised of a grassy plain and tree-dotted hills with a faint, pale blue sky. A few deer grazing in the plain are visible at the viewer's left. The drawer's credit below the center of the image reads: "On Stone by W?E. Hitchcock." The legend directly below this reads: "Texan Skunk." The artist's credit at the bottom corner at the viewer's left reads: "Drawn from Nature by J. J. Audubon. F.R.S. F.L.S." The printer's credit at the bottom corner at the viewer's right reads: "Lith. Printed & Cold. By J.T. Bowen, Phil."
