Description

This is a hand-colored lithograph of the Texan Skunk by J. T. Bowen, after original artwork by John James Audubon. This lithograph was published for the Octavo Edition of Audubon's The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, which he completed in collaboration with John Bachman. This is No.11 , Pl. LIII. The image features a single skunk with a broad white stripe that begins between its eyes and continues to the base of its all-white tail. Unlike the depiction of the Texan Skunk in 2019.3.25, this skunk has the body of the small bird clamped in its jaws, and its head is pointed down and toward the viewer. The skunk is also positioned to the viewer's right of the center, with the grassy plain and tree-covered hills in the distance to the viewer's left. The sky is rendered in a beige shade. The legend along the bottom edge reads: " Texan Skunk." The artist's credit at the bottom corner at the viewer's left reads: "Drawn from Nature by J. J. Audubon, F.R.S. F.L.S." The printer's credit at the bottom corner at the viewer's right reads: "Lith. Printed & Cold. by J. T. Bowen, Phila." This lithograph was received with two pages of text (2019.3.27b[1] and 2019.3.27b[2]) for the Swift Fox or Kit Fox, Vulpes Velox.
