Description

This is a colored chromolithograph of the White-bellied Swallow by J. Bien, after the Birds of America engravings by Robert Havell, Jr., after original artwork by John James Audubon. This is No. 7-5, Plate 46, which is printed at the upper corners at the viewer's left and right, respectively. The image depicts a male and female bird in flight. The male, with spread wings, is facing the female, providing the viewer with a top view of the bird with its blue-tinted feathers along the back. The female, with beak open towards the male directly above, has her wings tucked in and is positioned to provide the viewer with a view of the bird's underside. A faint detail sketch of a feather is located to the side of the pair at the viewer's right. A pale grey-blue irregular shape provides the only backdrop. The center inscription along the bottom edge reads: "White-bellied Swallow / HIRUNDO BICOLOR, Vieill, / Male, 1. Female, 2." The artist's credit at the bottom corner at the viewer's left reads: "Drawn from Nature by J. J. Audubon, F.R.S, F.L.S."
