Description

This is an Amsterdam edition facsimile of Robert Havell, Jr.'s engraving of the Wood Wren, after original artwork by John James Audubon. The facsimiles for this edition were copied from originals in the Teyler Museum in the Netherlands. The prints were made using eight-color offset printing (Audubon Prints, Steiner). This is No. 36, Plate CLXXIX. This image features a single male wood wren, facing to the viewer's left, crouched on a rock among a mound of greenery with a few clusters of red berries. A few small branches, green leaves, and a yellow stem with a cluster of blue berries add height to the composition. The inscription at the bottom center of the image reads: "Wood Wren, / TROGLODYTES AMERICANA, / Male / Smilacina borealis." The artist's credit at the bottom corner at the viewer's left reads: "Drawn from Nature by J. J. Audubon. F.R.S. F.L.S." The engraver's credit at the opposite corner reads: "Engraved, Printed & Coloured by R. Havell, 1833." The watermark for this edition, "G. Schut & Zonen R Audubon T (Both the R and T are stylized.)," is present in its entirety along the rough edge at the viewer's left of the image, near the center and corner at viewer's left, with a partial watermark at the corner at the viewer's right.
