2019.21.0011Description
Souvenir folder of cards depicting scenes along the Overseas Highway and in Key West. There are 14 images in all, printed on 7 cards folded accordion-style. The caption reads, 'Quaint Old Key West is blending in fast with the modern new look. Houses over a century old nestle next to modern up to date dwellings. The homes of such notables as Audubon and Ernest Hemingway are located here as well as the winter White House of several presidents. The southernmost point of land in the continental United States, and the southernmost home are located here. The narrow streets line with old homes and churches, and buildings are reminiscent of the old days, and give the area a local flavor not found anywhere else in this country. In 1935, a tropical hurricane destroyed the railroad that connected Key West with the mainland. The F.E.C. Railroad offered the right of way for construction of a modern highway, and in 1942 Key West was connected with the mainland with a novel highway in which there are 41 bridges with a length of over 18 miles. Key West is a sport fishing capital, as well as being the bast of a large shrimping and turtle trapping industry. The Navy maintains large installations here with Air, Submarine and operations bases.'Subject Place
