Shipbuilding adze once belonging to Oscar 'Berry' Arenberg, the oldest ship carpenter in Key West when he died at 91 years old. He was employed by the Florida East Coast Railway during the construction from Boot Key to Key West. Arenberg used the adz as a finishing tool to smooth up the faces of a timber hewn out with the broadaxe. A good adzman could work up an incredibly smooth face on a timber. It was the forerunner of the modern boatyard joiner-planer.Collection
