Postcard depicting the USS MAINE memorial monument in Havana, Cuba. The caption reads, ‘USS Maine Monument, Havana, Cuba’. Notation on verso, ‘Built by the people of Cuba in grateful memory of the crew of the ill-fated U. S. Battleship “Maine” which was blown up in the harbor of Havana, February, 1898. This catastrophe was an important factor in causing the United States to assist Cuba in her war for independence.’ The message on the verso reads, ‘July 1, 1947, I feel sure you will like to look at the picture on the other side. Hope all is well at C.M.I. Love to all, S.S. and S.M.R.’ The postcard is addressed to Sister M. Caroline, Convent, Key West, Florida, and is postmarked Havana, Cuba July 2, 1947.Subject Place
