Description

Black and white photograph of a Florida East Coast Railway locomotive on the tracks following the Labor Day Hurricane. Caption on verso, 'Upper Matecumbe Key after the hurricane that struck on Labor Day, 1935. This view shows the locomotive of the train sent to rescue the veterans. Number 447 was a 4-8-2 type with cylinders measuring 26" by 28" and drivers over 6' in diameter. It was built in 1926 and weighed more than 160 tons, which is the reason it withstood the storm surge and remained on the tracks.'
