Postcard depicting a steamship and men in small boats in a harbor.  The caption reads, ‘Cramp’s Shipyard, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.’  The description on the verso reads, ‘Cramp’s Ship Yard, Beach and Ball Streets, erected 1830.  Over 300 vessels were built in these yards, including some of the best known “Ocean Greyhounds” and warships.’  The message on the verso reads, ‘Dear Captain, I understand tomorrow is your 81st birthday, would be pleased to see you and have a good talk about days gone by.  I hope you are enjoying yourself.  It is the same old thing here on Arch Street Wharf.  Many Happy returns of the Day.  Write to me. D. M. Hall, Arch Street Wharf, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.’  Note on the verso reads, ‘Received and answered September 13, 1913.’  The card is addressed to Captain James R. Hattrick, Room 332, House H. Sailors Snug Harbor, New Bright, New York, and is postmarked Philadelphia.Collection
