Description

Red and black velvet bullet shaped armband with the number '26' in white velvet. Worn by a member of the 26th of July Movement which was a revolutionary movement led by Fidel Castro that overthrew the regime of Fulgencio Batista in Cuba in 1959. This armband was said to have been worn by Lieut. Benito Atamore, who was born in Key West on July 4, 1910. He belonged to Castro's underground in Havana for some time until he fled and became an officer of the Second National Front of Escambray (Segundo Frente Nacional del Escambray). Its name commemorates an attack on the Santiago de Cuba army barracks on July 26, 1953. The movement began formally in 1955 when Castro went to Mexico to form a disciplined guerrilla force.
