Description

Momsen lung underwater breathing and escape apparatus designed to enable individual escape from a disabled or sunken submarine, developed for the U.S. Navy as an emergency submarine escape apparatus. The apparatus is constructed primarily of rubberized fabric, rubber tubing, and metal or steel fittings and control components. It consists of a breathing bag, mouthpiece, separate inhalation and exhalation tubes, and a metal canister containing soda lime. The soda lime absorbs carbon dioxide from exhaled air, allowing the breathing gas to be recirculated during ascent. The inflated rubberized breathing bag also provides buoyancy and functions as a life preserver when the wearer reaches the surface.
