Painted wood carving by Mario Sanchez depicting two central characters standing outside the Hemingway Home at the center of the work. Ernest Hemingway stands in front of his home giving away a handful of yellowtail snappers. Other street vendors along Whitehead Street include the Ambulant Vet and Hard Times Dray. Three carved clouds depict from left to right - bells, a bullfight, and a fishing boat.
Caption written by Sanchez, 'Ernest Hemingway purchased this house in 1931 and occupied it frequently until 1939. He brought his catch to the sidewalk and gave his fish to the neighbors or to people walking by. Rosa and I lived across the street. I have featured two of his best known novels in the clouds: 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' and 'Death in the Afternoon', the latter he wrote in Key West. I also picture his boat Pilar, which he kept in Key West and in Cuba. Riding the bicycle is Santiago, a very generous man who offered his free services, making house calls to cure animals. He was a self taught veterinarian. Hard Times Dray was rightly named, for this was during the Depression.'Type of Sculpture
