Description

Wood carving by Mario Sanchez depicting Demeritt's Market on the waterfront with local conchs sorting and selling fish on one side while another group of conchs sort through sponges. A boat is unloading fish in the background. The wood carving is two pieces of wood bolted and glued together with a simple frame nailed to sides. Caption written by Sanchez reads, 'The description is right, except this section of the city did not have anything to do with the navy yard. The navy yard was a few blocks to the south. In the background across the water was Trumbo Island, which was the train terminal and where the P&O Steamship Company's and other freighters docked. A few years ago, the navy took over Trumbo Island.' Caption in the file reads, 'Demeritt brothers were fishermen who displayed their catch for sale in tin tubs and baskets. The fish were so fresh, they wiggled. Demeritt's Fish Market was near the A&B Lobster House between Greene and Front Streets. The fisherman at the left had just brought in his day's catch to sell at Demeritt's. The two men at far right are trimming sponges. The building was on property which is now part of the navy yard.'
