Wood carving by Mario Sanchez depicting Pillo Santiago's Fishermen's Cafe located on the waterfront on the corner of Margaret and Caroline Streets. A sponging boat passing by in the background. The shack was moved to Front Street near Mallory Square in the 1990s. Two pieces of wood bolted together.
Caption written by Sanchez reads, 'This shack was always a very popular place. In the 1930s Teddy Knowles had an ice cream parlor for many years, where Teddy made his famous coconut and sapodilla sherbets. Another business man bought the place for a restaurant and named it The Fishermen's Cafe. This shack was moved to Front Street, Mallory Square, about two or three years ago. It still carries the same name: The Fishermen's Cafe'.
A second caption for the piece reads, 'A very popular place, where good food was served and where the gossip of the day was in order. On the sidewalk and sitting on the bench are popular Key West people. Before the Fishermen's Cafe it was Teddy Knowles Ice Cream Parlor, where old-fashioned tropical fruit sherbet was served and where they gave you "a plenty" for only ten cents.'Type of Sculpture
