Cuban Club - Childhood DaysEntry/Object ID
1987.01.3206Description
Woodcarving by Mario Sanchez depicting the Cuban Club at 1108 Duval Street. On the street in front of the club are two street vendors - one peddler is pushing his cart while another man is in the horse-drawn 'Panaderia' cart.
Caption written by Sanchez reads, 'The Cuban Club brings back grateful memories of my childhood days. Here is where I acted as a comedian when I was 12 years of age, together with a group of children - thespians, directed by Pepe Lopez and Ernest (Baby) Salazar. Also here is where I won the City's Singles Pocket (Pool) Billiards Championship in 1935 when I was 27 years of age.' A separate note in Sanchez's handwriting reads, 'This Club was founded in 1900 by a group of young Key Westers of Cuban descent. It functioned for many years as a mutual and recreational club. Every so often the club held checkers, chess and pocket billiards tournaments, and also held dances, which attracted the youth from every section of Key West. A few years ago it was sold to a private enterprise. A fire totally destroyed the building.'Type of Sculpture
