Wood carving by Mario Sanchez depicting the San Carlos Institute on Duval Street. Also visible are Barberia de Rafael and Teodoro Holtsbero. The Pee-roo-lee Man is walking down the street.
Caption in file reads, 'A three story wooden structure built in 1871, the first floor of the San Carlos Institute was a theater, the other two housed a school and cultural activities. The Cuban community in Key West raised the money for the building by popular subscription. Mario notes that the school that operated in the building may have been the first integrated school in the United States. The structure was named for the Cuban patriot Carlos Manuel de Cespedes, the first man to raise the Cuban flag on October 19, 1868, and begin the long struggle for independence from Spain. The tiny barbershop between the two large buildings contains, in addition to the barber and his customer, a portrait of Cuban patriot Jose Marti'.Type of Sculpture
