Woodcarving depicting a street scene at the corner of Simonton Street and Catherine Street. A man is milking a cow in front of a drug store, children are jumping rope in front of a house while another group of children are gathered in front of the grocery store observing a monkey.
Caption written by Sanchez reads, 'None of the houses at the corner of Catherine and Simonton Streets still remain. This is the present site of the First State Bank. Mongo, the milkman, sold fresh milk on the hoof. On his route through the neighborhood, people brought their tin cans to be filled for 10 cents a quart. Pepe, the vendor in front of Bravo's Grocery, sold Cuban sweets; little round pieces filled with guava. In front of the excusador (outhouse on the right) is Monkey Man, an Italian, who arrived in Key West before the turn of the century. When no one offered any more coins, he would pick up his monkey, resume his street chant: 'Moaney makey de moankey dansah. No moaney no dansah' and then he would go to another part of town.
